I copied the following poem from a notebook where I'd written it in 1998. The only thing I remember about the author is that she is
someone called: 'Irene The Poem Lady'.

**************************************************

'Twas the night before Judgement and all through the town,
every creature was stirring and moving around.
The movies we'd gone to were filling our heads
with visions of playboys, and Nazis and Reds.
With Ma in her jumpsuit and I in my slacks,
we're downing our liquor and smoking our packs.
The children had gone to a pot smoking bash,
so we jumped in the car but the beer made us crash.
Lucky for us we survived the wreck,
but the poor other guy,
he lost his neck.
Let's go see 'The Godfather' someone exclaimed,
and watch all the bodies get mangled and maimed.
What a thrill! What excitement!...as each person died.
Now for dessert, let's go see 'Bonnie & Clyde' !
Forget about Sodom on it's Judgement day.
Let's all join the movement to liberate gays!
Just turn on the TV and watch any show.
Why, ... It's called alternative lifestyles,
didn't you know?
Let's all go to church, leave our Bibles at home,
discuss all the problems of Vatican, Rome.
Let's give our opinions of what's good and bad,
then get in an argument and all go home mad.
We spend our last hours destroying God's church;
For it looks like the other fella's fell from our perch.
So we gave up the church 'cause we just can't agree
that the wrong one is you and the right one is me.
So back to our orgies, tobacco and beer.
But, wait!.....is that thunder outside I hear?
Oh, it's just a storm, don't get excited.
But look!...all the stars in the sky have collided!
It's getting much hotter, our fevers are high.
Oh, but a God of love would not let us die!
But up in the air I believe that I see,
a crowd of people that He loved more than me.
I told Him I loved Him, was even immersed,
I wonder how He knew that I loved myself first.
I finally yelled at the top of my lungs,
"You gave me no warning of when You would come!"
But I heard Him exclaim as He rose out of sight,
"I told you I'd come, and I'd come like a thief in the night."
The End
